Class handout for the Mac beginner class--It is my practice to correct, add and change my handouts after almost every class per thoughts and questions that arise as I go along. This one needs a bit of re-sequencing re the first part...Much of it is only an outline of the subjects we cover...


Basic Operating Procedures for Apple Computers

·         Starting-up: Press the button on left rear of computer or on top right for laptops.



·        Shutting down: L click on Apple Icon (upper left) > Shut Down (or press button used to start)



·        The Mouse (or Mouse Pads on laptops - See settings in System Preferences)°©

Practice with Free IMac  Paint Brush & Solitaire programs (See below re downloading)



·       The Mac  Full Sized Keyboard:






·        Laptop Keyboard.  (Top Row - Same as left block above)










Apple Major Setup and Tools: (Take Notes)



·        Specs/version re programs & applications. L Click Apple Icon > About This Mac > (Snow-Leopard=v.10.6; Leopard=v.10.5; Tiger has Blue Apple Icon.) For Application Versions: L. Click on Applications



·        Apple Software updates ( must be connected to internet)- L click Apple Icon - upper Left> Software Updates> All updates will be added -You will need your Mac Password!!



·      "System Preferences" - (Control Panel in Microsoft) Left click-check all: Apple Icon> System Preferences---Setting up: ---Desktop, Dock, Displays, Power, Mouse / Trackpad.



·        Setting Time/Date:  In System Preferences use "Time & Date" or L Click on time at upper rt. corner of desktop.



·        The Desktop: Setting up the Icons you will need: L. click: Finder on top line> Preferences> General Tab>- check all boxes. To remove Unused-Unwanted Desktop icons, drag-drop in  TRASH



·        Finder &/or Macintosh Hard Drive icon-To find Folder / File storage-Also;  in Applications drag to Dock to drop there;





·        The "Dock" in the startup window:  Setting up, adding and removing programs etc. Moving programs from Applications folder to the Dock. Small dot under icon show it is "OPEN.  Right click on icon to choose Open - Close - Remove from dock. Removing returns program to Applications folder.



·        Spotlight - Small circle at upper right to search all computer + Help Info. & searches to find almost anything



·        Trash: Drag & drop items to be deleted + remove from Trash + Rt. Click to Empty Trash



·        Dashboard: Setting widgets of your choiceŠ.



·        Safari (Internet Explorer) -Using Bookmarks (with username & Passwords) for often visited web sites.



·        Email: Setup: L Click "MAIL" > PREFERENCES > ACCOUNTS > L. Click PLUS sign (below left) > follow instructions-(AOL should be simple)--(Call your internet provider for problems.)



Exploring Files,  Storage Folders



Managing Apple  Windows  ---3 small buttons top left of window - (red, yellow & green) = (close , minimize & maximize) -- this  window.  Also,   Drag lower right corner of window to enlarge it. Drag top to move the window up, down or sideways



To shut down a frozen Mac  = L click on Apple icon> emergency close; or - Control + Option + Delete (under fn) > Task Manager> Shut Down - (same as  Control  + Alt  + Delete in Windows XP )



Creating Folders and copying to (Drag & Drop) + opening in programs



Renaming any folder or file: L. click it -turns blue-type a new name.

·        Enlarge the print on screen :Command and  (+ key 2d row l of delete)

·        Delete Key Left  (below  F 12 at top) =   to  delete  left

·        To Delete to Right on Laptop = press Delete + fn key

·        Delete to Right on full keyboard = press other Delete key under fn .

·        Brighten/Darken Screen press  F1 - F2 (Top Row)

·        Sound Volume - Mute - Reduce - Increase press F10 - F11 -F12 (Top Row)

·        To eject a CD/DVD Disk  press  ^ Key (Top Row rt. of  F12)

·        Enlarge or reduce text size in Mail or Safari = COMMAND and plus or minus (upper right).

·        Downloading & Installing Software Updates -L. Click Apple  (Upper rt. > Updates.. ( All Programs + Leopard}

·        

Apple Screen copy & Print:



 Part of a Screen = Command + Shift + 4  =  then trace with mouse square to be copied - an icon    appears on the desktopŠ..L click to open > file >Print (drag icon  to trash when finished)



 All of a Screen = Command + Shift + 3 = an icon appears on desktop with entire screenŠl click as above,


Selecting-Highlighting: (Photos, words, etc.) Selection turns blue - for doing something more with it (ie "Delete"," Copy", "Email", "Edit", etc

·        L. Click on item = blue frame for one selection

·        L. Click on 1st item, then Shift + L Click on last item = select several items

·        L. Click 1st item + Command  & L Click on more items = select different items.

·        Command + Letter A = Select all items.

·        (L. Click on item + drag = select several items) for Word Processing programs.

·        

·        Deselect : all selected items = L. Click in an empty area



Specific Program/Applications (Take Notes)



·        Apple Text Edit (Word Processing included with Leopard) - At 1st screen, L click > Format > Wrap to Window: Also Format > Show Font  to set type style.



·        I Photo: imports, albums, editing, & slide shows.



·        I-Tunes & Apple Store; Downloading ITunes, Movies, etc.



·        Flash Drives, CD & DVD Player: Demo-Note Important : to remove any of these when computer is running you must first "EJECT"  or loss of data may result.



·        Preview Program (for photo viewing outside IPhoto) )



·        Paintbrush & Klondike Solitaire - Free from Apple Store Downloads



·        I Chess - (game Supplied)



·        Microsoft  Office 2008 for Mac = Word, Excel, Power Point ( Buy @ $250.) In Mac Word 2008 -Click on Oval in upper rt. corner  for all toolbar functions
