Computer Gadgets
Gadgets: iPhones, MP3s, Palm Pilots and Others will be the subject of our next Computer Club.
Many of us suffer from confusion about all these gadgets. Our own John Beirne, whom we at SeniorNet have dubbed "Professor of explaining complicated things in simple terms", will try to help us make some sense of these gadgets, and point out some practical tasks for their use.
Please join us for what should be a most interesting and informative presentation. John will show us how some of these devices can make your phone calls, store your addresses and phone numbers, find street addresses, display street maps, display photos, display web pages, plus play video and music.
John will also talk about how to back up your digital phone numbers to your Mac or PC, so if your phone accidentally gets dropped into the dishpan, you can use your computer to reload all your numbers onto your replacement phone, instead of retyping all of them.
John himself currently owns both an iPhone and a Palm Pilot. He will give his impression of these, plus some comments on the other devices.
Computer Club is free and open to all. No advance reservations are required.
Tue July 22, 5:30 - 7:30 pm - Computer Club
Downloading Audio Books & eBooks
Library Fourth floor- SeniorNet Center. No registration needed. All ages are welcome to attend. This is a free presentation.
The next computer club meeting will be a demonstration on how to download great books like these, pictured above and hundreds more. You'll learn how to download the titles to a computer and easily transfer them to a MP3 player or other device. Downloading and reading ebooks will also be covered.
For a one time cost of a single audiobook on CD, readers who prefer to listen to a book can now access a digital library of over 500 popular audiobook titles. The Lycoming County Library System has contracted with OverDrive to offer the public a selection of audiobooks that can be downloaded to a simple, inexpensive MP3 players or other devices.
Library cardholders can checkout and download fiction and nonfiction for both adults and children to a personal computer anytime, anywhere. Once downloaded, digital titles can be enjoyed on the computer or transferred to MP3 players. Many titles can be burned to a CD to enjoy in the car. At the end of the 14-day lending period titles automatically “expire” and return themselves to the digital shelves. No overdue fines or books to return.
Some titles are available to single borrowers at one time. If they are checked out readers can automatically place themselves on a waiting list. Other titles are available for multiple borrowers at anytime all the time.
(shorter version of above) Tue July 22, 5:30 - 7:30 pm - Computer Club, 4th Floor Learning Center.
'Downloading Audio Books & eBooks',
presented by the Library's Technology Trainer Charles Ormsbee.

Wii, Video Gaming For All Ages
LOCATION: Family Place in Library basement (enter by rear stairs) -- Please note change from normal location.
Presented by Library staff Jeff Breon and Lynn Williams.
Nintendo's Wii video game system is being used in senior centers and rehabilitation clinics. Find out why at our next Computer Club. The Library staff will demonstrate the system and give some of us a chance to try it out. The secret is in the innovative Wii remote, which uses motion sensors to react to your movements.
Our Bits & Bytes Editor, Margie Shaw, had a chance to try out Wii bowling. She reports that, to her amazement, it picked up the curve that she has in regular bowling. You can enjoy the sport again even if you have arthritis or bad knees. It can even be done sitting down. Wii is more than just games -- the module includes different channels such as weather forcast, news, Internet, chat rooms, and more.
Computer Club is free and open to all. No advance reservations are required.

== eBranch Overview by Doug Loss ==
The eBranch is an entirely online library branch that is available to any Lycoming County resident from any internet-connected computer.
The eBranch website is divided into five sections: Get it NOW, Ask it NOW, LEARN it NOW, for KIDS NOW, and Look it UP NOW.
Get it NOW is your jumping off point for signing up for a library card, for downloading audiobooks to listen to on your computer or MP3 player, for downloading ebooks to read on your computer, and for downloading music, videos, and news.
Ask it NOW lets you connect with a live tutor for help with student's homework seven days a week from 3 PM to 10 PM. We have Ferguson's Career Guidance Center here, which gives you information on over 3300 different jobs and tutorials on looking for, finding, getting, and holding the job you want.
LEARN it NOW provides the Auto Repair Reference Center, with instructions on how to do many repairs to your vehicle. Learning Express Library provides tutorials and sample tests for many different things. Learn a Language has many different courses to help you learn another language.
For KIDS NOW has online animated audio story books for the younger kids. There's a section for the preschool kids too. For teens, there are many links to help improve their writing skills, to suggest interesting reading, and to let them interact with other teens from around the world.
Look it UP NOW has everything else we couldn't fit under one of the first four categories. Select "Online Resources (Subjects)" and you can see and browse through all the different areas, from health to legal to business to education.
